This was my son's third time asking me for the day. His chores weren't done, and he had thrown several tantrums already. I told him no.
When Dad came home, my son asked him, and quickly the tablet was in his hands. That moment said everything.
I consider myself a conscious parent. Their dad has a more permissive style. Learning to parent alongside someone who operates from a completely different default has been one of the quieter, harder parts of our relationship.

When the city announced Atlanta would host eight FIFA World Cup matches, Daniel was ready to capture the economic bump from the extra visitors this summer. She applied for grants to make improvements to her storefront and marketing ahead of the tournament and received two. My Nomadic Family Has Traveled to 12 Countries — Here Are 12 Lessons We Take with Us Everywhere
I’ve always been an avid traveler, so in October 2025 when I told my children (ages 5 and 10) that I wanted to travel the world with them, they didn’t bat an eye. This wasn’t our first rodeo, after all. In 2017, before my youngest was born, my eldest and I did a tour of Europe that included Italy, France, Denmark, and Spain for three months. Since then, I’ve taken both kids to Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Jamaica. My kids are well-traveled, so they know what to expect.
This time the plan was to travel indefinitely (we had no return date) and to go wherever we fancied. So I purchased one-way tickets to Bangkok, Thailand, for my two kids and me, and we left Dad behind at our home base of 10 years — Atlanta, Georgia — because he has a career that is location-dependent. I felt like I was leaving home behind as my kids and I trekked across the world.

Helping vs. Hovering: How To Know When You're Doing Too Much
Parents are no longer just attending basketball games. They are telling the coach how to coach and feeling frustrated if their child does not get enough playing time. There is intense pressure to create an ideal childhood and raise a child who is good at sports, popular, excelling academically, getting into every college, and eating all the right foods—that pressure can make it hard for parents to take a step back.
I have seen this pressure play out up close at my own child’s activities. At a basketball game for 4-year-olds, parents on the sidelines began arguing with the coach about their kids’ playing time and positions. The intensity of the other parents’ reactions felt in proportion to what was happening on the court.

I did not come to Thailand expecting a lesson in how broken the American healthcare system truly is. I came because my son needed braces, and back home, the quote nearly made me stop breathing. Almost four thousand dollars for a mouthful of metal. Four thousand for something his dentist described as “routine.” Four thousand for a child who still loses his shoes at school and asks for snacks every thirty minutes.
Still, taking care of your kids is not optional. So I did what most American parents do. I tightened my budget. I shifted bills. I convinced myself I would figure it out. That is what families do. We stretch.

My 81-year-old grandma is still in remarkable health. She says not chasing traditional success is the key to her longevity.
My grandmother has seven children, numerous grandchildren, and even more great-grandchildren. I was shocked that she wanted them all to come, but we obliged and took them over. That moment summed her up perfectly: full of life, spontaneity, and joy.

Homeschooling my kids while running my own businesses is not easy. I do it for the freedom it gives us to travel.
I have always known that I wanted to homeschool my children. I planned for it before they were even born. I had a rental property that I would list on Airbnb, allowing me more flexibility to dedicate my days to schooling.
Unfortunately, my plan was upended when my condo association changed its rules about short-term rentals. I continued my longtime work as a marketing consultant while homeschooling. Earlier this year, I also started a company focused on kids' events.
